Ever Thought Of Investing In Collectibles?

Updated: Oct 14, 2022

According to an Associated Press US News and World Report article from September of 2021 Americans obsession with collectibles and nostalgia have turned collectibles into another kind of stock portfolio. As more collectors and investors take collectibles out of the market and hold onto them, the supply available for purchase will decrease. This will cause demand and value to increase. Those holding onto the collectible like a stock will hope to see a steady increase in value and ones for sale harder to find. The casual collector or trading card player will find themselves priced out of what they are looking for.

This trend is true for popular action figure classics such as the original 1970s and 1980s Kenner Star Wars and the 1980s Hasbro GI Joe action figure line. This can be loose figures or those still sealed in the original cardback (also know as Mint on Card). Collectible investing also holds true for classic trading card games like Magic The Gathering and Pokemon. Trading cards can be individual, sealed in the original wax packs, or still sealed in the original boxes. Old school video games from Nintendo, PlayStation, and other systems are also part of the trend. Video games are usually disk only, cartridge only, in the box (also know as Complete In Box), or in the original jewel case. Action figure characters, trading cards, or video game that have notoriety, are a first edition, factory sealed, or a limited release (rare) will fetch money.

Condition will become more of a factor as age will bring further wear and tear. Classic trading cards still in near mint to mint condition will fetch a premium. Most times the original action figure cardback or video game box was discarded upon the original purchase. It is even more difficult to find original cardbacks or boxes that are undamaged or with minimal flaws. Most collectors also look for what is known as complete. This mean all of the original factory components are included such as the cardback, figure, bubble, and accessories for action figures. All available boxes, jewel cases, cartridges, disks, booklets, artwork, maps, stickers, and advertisements are complete video games.

Trading cards, actions figures, and video games that are graded by a reputable grading company fetch a higher premium because they assure the authenticity and condition of the collectible. The item is also encapsulated to help protect it from ageing and damage.

I suggest being patient and diligent to find the best value for a collectible. You can utilize places such as online stores and Facebook buy and sell groups. You can consider researching the potential value of a newer release toy line, video game, or trading card. These could be purchased on the lower end before it may skyrocket in future value. Once you are committed to a purchase you should be willing to tuck it safely away for a period of time and allow its value to grow. Do your research and understand the collectible you are looking for. Know if there are variants, rarity factors, condition, and how to spot reproductions or fakes.
